Based on true historical events, I really wanted to love this book. Historical fiction is my jam. This one just didn’t do it for me.

I really didn’t care for the transition between chapters. I was being so engrossed in the historical pieces, and then tossed into progressing later years with no warning. I just didn’t connect with the later years side the way I had with the youth side.

The youth pieces, that’s where this book shines, for me at least. The toss between character perspectives really worked for me in the story telling. Everything felt so real and authentic, outrageous and disturbing.

Such a sad storyline. It was based on true events, which makes it more powerful. Regardless of how the story came through for me, the reality of it really sits heavy once the book is finished.

Yes it was good, but not great for me. 3 stars
