I really enjoyed this one, but I've found it difficult to put my feelings for it into a review. There was so much to take in. I found this one to have so many pieces that over lapped and interlaced, it makes it difficult to really label it one thing. There is an essence of crime drama, some family tragedy, a little romance, and a serious dose of who done it. I tried my best to put my "super sleuth" skills to work here, but failed 100%.
The story is wrapped around a trial. Throughout the span of said trial, we meet and experience events through the eyes of different and recurring characters. I absolutely love this type of writing. I find that the details can occasionally get a little muddled, but I don't find that hurts the story line in the long run. If anything, I think that it adds to the intensity of things, because you have to try to keep your facts straight through 5 different tellings of the same story. Somewhere in there is the truth, and it's up to the reader to pick that out.
I did find a few of the topics a little difficult to stomach. I can't say for sure what was the reasoning there, being the topic in itself or that I am a mother, so some pieces might hit me a little harder than others, it's hard to say. The vivid details of the "incident' were pretty tough for me, and I will proudly say that I ugly cried during most of those recollections. I can not imagine going through that, from any of the perspectives in the story.
I found the majority of the characters likable and relate-able, with the exceptions being only the lawyers. I may have felt differently about them if I myself was a lawyer, but I can't be sure.
I really did appreciate all of the details I picked up about Autism and some of the different "treatment and therapy" options that are out there. I couldn't imagine myself putting my children through those, but as of this moment, I have no reason to. This here is the main focus of the book for me: what would you do differently if one small moment could change the course of your future or that of someone else?
All in all, excellent concept, very well written. Trigger warnings for parents for sure. 4.5 stars easy.
