Book Review: Someone We Know by Shari Lapena

Writer's picture: OineyOiney

What a nail biter! To begin the story with the murder, and then have the entire book to twist the reader into one theory or another, was an excellent writing design! I devoured it, desperately needing to get the next potential clue. As far as thrillers go, this one felt more like a murder mystery to me, but I didn’t mind at all!

A murder starts the story, and it’s grizzly and gory. We get so many details on the gruesome killing, but none of the important ones, like who is doing the murdering, and who the victim is.

So from the first step, were left feeling shocked, and slightly cheated. All I wanted to do was find out who the players were. We get the story through a wide variety of different characters point of view, which was really a great way to get tons of information, whether it was useful or not, was a mystery until the end. There was so much conflicting evidence, so many grey areas, I was pulled all over the map with my theories.

I did manage to piece a few things together, and I had the winning theory before the big reveal. If you were following really closely, it was a dead giveaway.

All in all, I felt the story was really well done, but because I accurately picked the bad guy, I’ll give it 4 stars rather than 5.
