Book Review: The Danish Girl by David Ebershoff

Writer's picture: OineyOiney

I went into this book with zero expectations. I, unlike the rest of the world apparently, had never heard of Lili Elbe and her story before. I enjoyed the journey of discovery here. From the first experience Einar Wegener has as Lili, we, the readers, see that there needs to be a change in his life. We see very clearly that inside of Einar is a lovely lady, and with her, the peace Einars has been missing his whole life. It was really amazing to experience the support Lili receives, from Greta and Carlyle, from Hans, as well as the Dr who changed it all. To think of the time these things were happening in, to know that Einars family simply accepted that he wasn't meant to be the way he was born, knowing Lili was the true identity, just touched me. I felt like Greta was so supportive because of her experiences growing up, that her wealthy family upbringing gave her the special piece of caring she needed to help Lili. To know that she would lose her husband, the life she had worked so hard for, and still she never hesitated. Such a touching story. The ending was a little too metaphorical for me. I really didn't feel like I understood what was meant to have happened. I actually asked someone who'd seen the film to try to compare notes. I like my endings to be direct. So, because of that, I'll rate it 3.5/5*
