Book Review: Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

I really enjoyed this one! I felt like I had something in common with Cather. I felt what she felt about being around people she didn’t know, about being in a situation that made her uncomfortable. The anxiety, I felt it right along with her.

I looooooved Levi. Maybe because he was a fantastic Mega Watt character, maybe because of the way Cath saw him, it’s hard to say. The way he was her absolute opposite really made him shine. The different level of smile he had tucked up inside him, ready to let out in the perfect moment, I felt like I’d known a few people just like him.

Nick was a character you loved to hate. He was the “Hans” of this book lol. He seemed like he could be someone great, but right from the beginning, the way the situations with him were written, you could tell he was scum, and he didn’t let us down in that. Reagan, on the other hand, seemed like a character we were meant to dislike in the beginning, but who was meant for something better by the end, and I’m definitely on that band wagon! Two really great additions to the story, these supporting characters.

I felt like some of the Mexican references were weird, just kind of tossed in here and there, maybe could have been left out all together, and we never would have missed those points in the story line?

The relationship between Cather, Wren and their father was so strained and sideways. I completely sympathized with the twins about keeping their father together. Being a parent of parents, that’s tough. I enjoyed the bits and pieces that all add up to their love for each other, in their own strange way.

To know that their mother was a useless character, a drama that barely came to fruition, that was also a bit of a struggle for me. To have all the emphasis on the relationship, or lack of, between mother and children, for it to crest and then drop off in the way it did, just felt super weird for me.

The ending felt a little bit rushed, but they always do for me. I’m never satisfied knowing a story is over, and I’m not going to hear more from any of these characters. Bums me out!

In the end, I love the story! The fanfic, the struggle of stepping out of ones comfort zone, such a great book!
