Book Review: After the Horses by Jeffrey Round

Writer's picture: OineyOiney

I judged a book by its cover. Shameful, I know. Boy, was I surprised when I started to read!! 100% not what I expected, but not in a bad way!

I loved this book from the get go. Dan Sharp is set up Toronto, Ontario, which I was not expecting! I knew all the locations mentioned, which was kind of fun for me. Some of the characters names got a little jumbled and hard to keep track of for me, since there are a few that are quite similar to one another, ie Danny and Donny, Lionel and Lonnie, but nothing a quick reread couldn’t fix.

The sense of humour and sexual tension/awkwardness in some scenes had me laughing out loud, enough that I had to reread passages to people around me to explain.

I really appreciated how real and raw the author portrayed the discrimination of the LGBT community by some people with dated religious beliefs. Nothing was sugar coated there, and I respect that a lot!

As far as mysteries go, I was sucker punched by how wrong I was in the end! Definitely a jaw drop moment that I didn’t see coming. 4.5 star. I’ll be looking for the rest of this series for sure!
